Animal Collective, Menomena Rock River To River

"New Yorkers have an insatiable appetite for free music," opines Valerie Lewis, Vice President Of Marketing And Communications for the Alliance For Downtown New York, who will help launch this year's River To River Festival. And the 2007 lineup might just heal the city's unique hankering.

This year's free festival will kick off the weekend of June 1 with Animal Collective and Roky Erikson And The Explosives, plus mid-day performances of Steps In The Street and Prelude To Action by the Martha Graham Dance Company at what Lewis calls the most famous intersection in the world: the intersection of Wall and Broad Streets.

The shows will continue throughout the summer and also feature the New Pornographers (this time around with Ms. Neko Case), Menomena, Spoon and others throughout the summer in downtown New York City. The sixth annual event will pair indie acts like Fujiya And Miuagi and Drive-By Truckers alongside soul, funk, blues, folk, salsa and samba shows. According to Lewis, River To River was born as a response to 9/11 and has grown and changed since 2002.

"Every year we've tried to better define the festival," she says. "Over the years our mission has really transformed from healing lower Manhattan to breathing new life into the arts downtown to leading the way for an arts center for the World Trade Center site."

Also part of the schedule is the legendary Bang On A Can Marathon (famous for its innovative music-making space and super laid-back attitude), which will celebrate its 20th year with 26 hours of continuous music with performances by, among many others, the Books, Dalek, and who else but the Bang On A Can All-Stars.

Earlier, former Busted frontman Charlie Simpson took to the stage with his post-hardcore band Fightstar for a short set which included the likes of 'Build An Army', 'Waste A Moment' and 'Wake Up'.

Juliette Lewis, who arrived onstage in a peacock feathered headband, pulled in a huge crowd as her band The Licks played an energetic show which culminated in the Hollywood star taking up stick duties during their 30 minute performance which included hit single 'Hot Kiss'.

Give It A Name 07 continues tomorrow (April 28) with performances from Brand New and Enter Shikari.
